Garden city of light

Located right in the centre of South East Asia is the capital of Malaysia -Kuala Lumpur. Residing in the state of Selangor, the city is about 243sq kilometers in area. With a population of over 1 .3 million, Kuala Lumpur is by far the largest city in Malaysia.
KL in short, came about during 1857. It began when Raja Abdullah, a representative of the administrator at that time, came to Ampang and found tin, which was greatly demand by the Americans and the British Empire. After which the British moved their administration from Klang to Kuala Lumpur. In 1882, after Frank Swettenham became Residents of Selangor, he rebuilt the village as the place had been destroyed by civil wars. As the Federation of Malaya gained its independence in 1957, Kuala Lumpur was declared the Federal capital. On 1st February
1974, Kuala Lumpur was officially declared a Federal Territory. It also marked the end of Selangor’s jurisdiction over Kuala Lumpur.
From a mining settlement, Kuala Lumpur has grown to today’s reputed urban city, leading the nation’s development in trade and commerce, banking and finance and information technology. The metropolitan city of Kuala Lumpur offers the colours and excitements of urban life. Beating with energy and endless fun, KL, with its towering skyscrapers and commercial buildings, one can expect great shopping, dining and entertainments. Today, Arts are being strongly promoted in Kuala Lumpur too

Major landmarks

Kuala Lumpur Railway Station
Reflecting the influence of Moorish architecture, the railway station, which was built in 1910, is a priceless heritage. The station was modernised in 1986 to provide air-conditioned comfort and improved facilities for passengers.

Kuala Lumpur Tower
Take a look of the beautiful skyscrapers of KL City from this tower, which is said to be one of the tallest concrete towers in the world measuring 421 metres. Within the tower, there is an observation deck and a revolving restaurant that serves mainly on local cuisine. Don’t forget to pop by this tower, it is definitely worth the trip.

Kuala Lumpur City Centre Park

Just beside the Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC Shopping Complex, the 20 hectare park was designed by the ate Roberto Burl Marx. Other than the flora and fauna found here, a prominent feature of the park is the Lake Symphony
- two musical fountains located at the esplanade outside the shopping centre.


National Museum

When the night falls, this place is considered as one of the best place to take a picture for memorial. Beautiful! A sense of awesomeness. The National Museum brings you in to the history of its country with many artifacts and rare items that you seldom see. Find out for yourself, you could be surprised by the collections it has and it does help to rouse your interest about Malaysia.

Petronas Twin Towers
In the heart of Kuala Lumpur stands the 88 storey Petronas Twin Towers at an astonishing height of 451.9 metres and is currently one of the world tallest buildings. The building, which was inspired by the Five Pillars of Islam, is where the Petronas Philharmonic Hall located housing both the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Petronas Performing Arts Group. Not forgetting Suria KLCC, the shopping complex at the base of the towers is another shopping paradise for the shopaholics. You can also pop by Petronsains Science Centre at level 4 to learn about Malaysia’s oil and gas industry.

National Science Centre

At Bukit Kiara, KL, you can never miss this new unique architecture national landmark, the National Science Centre. The design of this palatial building is based on the classical Malay architecture that resembles a truncated cone capped by a geodesic dome. Not only the look of it looks interesting but what inside will definitely fascinate both the young and the old.

Thean Hou Temple
This is one of the grandiose structure and largest temple in the region. Even if you are not a Taoist, perhaps to take a picture in front of this temple, especially at night is an added memorial of Malaysia.

Sultan Abdul Samad Building
Built in 1897, the building originally housed important government departments during colonial times. Consisting a copper dome and a 40 metres tall clock tower, the building is now an important backdrop for events such as the National Day Parade. The Supreme Court and the Textile Museum are now situated in the building.


Jamek Masjid (Masjid Jamek)
This mosque that is situated along Jalan Tun Perak is one of the oldest mosques in the city since 1909. The three elegant domes that give the building a unique structure came from the inspiration of the Mogul mosque in the North India. Open daily from 8am to 1pm and 230pm to 6pm. Dataran Merdeka
Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square faces the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. When Malaysia declared its independence in 1957, the Malaysian flag was hoisted on its 100 metres high flag pole here. The square is ideal for visitors to rest and relax by the fountain and pleasant environment. Below the square is Plaza Putra where an underground mall can be found and where the dramatic arts community showcases their latest plays and works.

By Air
There are over 40 international airlines offer daily flights from major cities to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) located at Sepang, an hour drive from the town centre. From KLIA, you can also take connecting flights to most major cities and towns in Malaysia as well as to Sabah and Sarawak.
Please take note that the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang is the old international airport caters only domestic air services.

Public Transport to and from KL International Airport (KLIA)
KLIA Ekspres — is the fastest way to and from the airport. These sleek high-speed Siemens trains depart and arrive daily from KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT) at an interval of 15 minutes. In just 28 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), you’ll arrive at KL CAT, located at the fringe of the city inside KL Sentral Station. At KL CAT, you can even check in your luggage and receive your boarding pass first if you are flying with M’sia Airlines. Then you may proceed to ride the train to KLIA. Remember, the minimum check in time is 2 hrs before flight departure and 1 hr for domestic flight without luggage.

By Driving
If you are driving from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur City Centre, cross the Woodland Causeway and take the North—South Expressway (E2) from Johor Bahru or use the Tuas Second Link (E3) into Malaysia. In Johor Bahru, you will drive through Terbau Highway linking to North—South Expressway (E2). The whole journey is about 4 hours non-stop driving at 100km/h to reach Kuala Lumpur. While reaching, keep to the right following the sign Kuala Lumpur- JALAN TIJN RAZAK. You must keep to the right to avoid missing the turn to Jalan Loke Yew which is only a lane away from Jalan Tun Razak. From here you will be reaching Jalan Bukit Bintang followed by Jalan Ampang where all the funs start.

Taxi
Taxis are readily available upon an agreed fare. Alternatively, you can request drivers to switch on the meter upon commencing the trip. There is a minimum fare for each taxi ride (RM2 for the first 2km and 10 cents for every 200 meters thereon) and an extra charge (50%) will be include for service after midnight (till 600am) or if you call through the phone (RM1) for each taxi, make sure you ride on the same taxi with the plate number given to you when you called to prevent disputes.

Bus

Buses are easily accessible to various parts of the town are available. Major service lines include Intrakota, Metro and Cityliner. They are inexpensive if you do not mind the crowd.

Rail

KL has a comprehensive and efficient rail transport system that links all the major parts of the city. There are four different rail lines operating here, Putra LRT, Star LRT, KTM Komuter and KL Monorail. All trains, except Star LRT, pass through the KL Sentral station. Trains are a great way to go about the city as they usually run on time and are not affected by rush hour traffic. I would strongly recommend you to take rails if you can, this will help you avoid unnecessary traffic jams and if you do not like to bargain on the taxi’s price. Light Rail Transit (LRT) has 2 LRT lines - STAR and PUTRA. Daily operating hours are 6:00am - 12:00pm. Stored value tickets can be purchased at any LRT station. You can check out on:

Self Drive

Traveling by car gives more flexibility to visit places that are out of the city centre. Many of the international car rental agencies have counters at the airport. Hotels can also help arrange for car rentals. An international driving permit or a recognized valid driving license is required to drive in Kuala Lumpur.
